10.3.10
We are learning about time and temperature and i would like to learn more about timezones because i would like to know what they are. Ryan, we will definitely be looking at time zones during this unit! Mrs. Breeds. 12.3.10
W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
There are 24 time zones across the world and they are 1 hour apart.
E.G=If New zealands time was 4.00pm it is 11.00am in singapore.
Time is measured in a place called greenwich in london. It's more accurate to say time is measured FROM a place called Greenwich. You could've clarified your example by explaining that Singapore is 5 time Zones behind us. 19.3.10
W.A.L.T: We are learning about exchange rates for currency.
I have learnt that in some countries you might have 100 dollars and if you go to another you might have 1000 dollars.
E.G: every NZ dollar= 70c U.S.A. Not necessarily 100 DOLLARS though, it is in the local currenty. That's why it can vary so much! 19.3.10
W.A.L.T: We are learning about the difference between celcius and fahrenheit for temperature.
I have learnt that Fahrenheit is the imperial measurement for celsius but the U.S.A still use it .
To convert celsius to fahrenheit you go Fahrenheit minus 32 divided by1.8 . To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, you use the formula you've indicated. You could also have shown an example of how to use the formula.

WALT:use algebraic thinking to solve decimal subtraction problems.
Today i learnt a really easy new strategy.
eg.
5.46-3.79
3.79+0.21=4
5.46+0.21=5.67
5.67-4=1.67 I am pleased you find this new strategy easy to use. That was why we learnt it today. It is designed so that you can use a s simple strategy to solve challenging problems. TC 29/3/10
W.A.L.T: Use temperature as a strategy to help us add and subtract integers.
Today we learnt to subtract integers to work out temperatures and i found it really easy.
E.G: +9--6 =+15
Pretend that you have a bath with the temperature was +6 and you thought it was to cold so you went --3 or you added 3 degrees to your bath as it is taking away the cold. +6--3=+9. It is good to see you learnt something in Maths today. I would like to know whether you would use this strategy when solving add and sub problems, TC
31/3/10
W.A.L.T: Add not subtract when working on decimal subtraction problems.
E.G: 2.38-1.12
1.12+ =2.38
1.12+1.26=2.38
I think this strategy is ok but i would rather the algebraic thinking one.
20/4/10
WALT: use a number of different problem solving strategies to solve complex problems.
Today i learnt that there is 9 problem solving strategies Trial and error, make a model, working backwards, draw a diagram, logical reasonig, act it out, look for a pattern, list or chart and known facts.I think i did quite well but i could get a lot better. Do you mean you could get better with using the different types of strategies Ryan? That is certainly something we will be looking at practising this term.
yes i do mean that. 21/4/10
WALT: find out what we know what we dont know and what think we know.
I want to know what a histograph is as it sounds interesting. Some things that i do know how to do are collecting data using a tally chart, pie graphs, bar graphs and more but i cant think of them right now. 26/4/10
WALT: find out what graphs we know.
Today I learnt how to do a scatter plot a dot plot and i remembered how to do a stem and leaf graph.
A dot plot is used for counting tallies. A scatter plot is like a line graph with out the lines . A stem and leaf graph is used for things like dates of birth. Some good examples here Ryan. Remember a dot plot can be used to show data and collect data - multi purposeful. 6/5/10
Today I learnt how to make a box and whisker graph. a box and whisker graph is useful for showing the median and outliers.
I think I could get better at reading it though. What do you think this type of graph could be used for? It is important that you can interpret all the information that is seen on this type of graph. 13/5/10
I have made a succesful survey that people seem to be able to understand. they have come back fast and i have only found one filled out badly. So what are you going to do with the ones that have been filled in incorrectly? Are they still valid data?
I will use all i can from them but i cant use what they didnt fill out.
20/5/10
Yesterday i did my first maths olympiad test i only got 2 out of 5 but some of them were stupid mistakes. Next time I will check my answers more as normally I will realise what i've done wrong as soon as I hand in my test. Try using another strategy to check your answer - even if it is the guess and check. If you are checking, working backwards is a really good one. 24/5/10
Today we discussed with a buddy our teaching mobiles, if they need any thing more or if you can understand it etc.I still need to add some more things on to it but i have a fair idea what i need to do. 27/5/10
Today I did my second otago problem solving test my score was 4/5. I doubled my score from last time and i almost guessed the last question but i decided that what i thought was wrong so i didn't put it down but it turned out it was correct. So what did you learn from this? That it pays to take a gamble as sometimes you can be right-on! 31/5/10
Yesterday wer did a knowledge test in the form of a power point i found out that i have to be able to work out factors faster as that slowed me down the most.
Out of 40 questions i got 6 wrong but 5 were either silly mistakes or i didnt quite read the question on time. 16/6/10
Today we did an australasian problem solving test i only got 2 out of 5 so i didnt do to well but next time i am aiming for at least 4 out of 5.
